Our Field Trips

  • An exhibition in English and French examining taxidermy's role in advancing knowledge and appreciation of animals. Participate in a guided exploration of the exhibit and experience the visual power of taxidermy. Grades 2-4 will learn about animals and their habitats through engaging gallery activities. Grades 5-7 will take on the role of a museum curator and will be encouraged to think critically about the role of natural history collections in museums.
  • Role play buyers for our museum shop “The Global Village”. Visit our global marketplace and purchase objects that may or may not have been created in an ethical and sustainable way. Play with toys from around the world and recommend which ones promote cultural awareness and should be sold in our store.
  • Play an immigration game in our Vancouver history galleries. Explore the galleries and examine suitcases of real immigrants while collecting points and money towards immigrating. This program focuses on who and why people immigrate, life for new immigrants and immigrants?
  • Little Victoria lived in Vancouver a long time ago. Follow five generations of her family as you hear the story of her lost doll, then role-play archaeologists to excavate toys like Victoria's. Play with toys from the Museum's teaching collection
  • Time travel back to 1886 with Matt and Jenny. Do chores from the pioneer days using a wringer-washer, butter churn and antique stove! Play with toys and experience school in early Vancouver. Role-play a picnic the day of the Vancouver Fire and see real artifacts that survived the fire.
  • Excavate First Nations artefacts and follow the Inuit seasonal food cycle to learn how aboriginal cultures met the basic needs of food, clothing and shelter. Handle real First Nations and Inuit artefacts from our teaching collection.
  • Uncover the science of archaeology by investigating artefacts from the ancient cultures of Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Indus Valley, China, Greece, and Rome. Work in teams to do a simulated field dig, then research and analyse artefacts in a lab to make and test a hypothesis. Examine a real Egyptian mummy and learn about the process of mummification.
  • Discover Vancouver from the 1900s-1970s with a guided tour of the Museum's new history galleries. Create your own displays with artifacts from Vancouver's history. Explore our 1920s, 50s and 60s exhibits with a guided questionnaire.
  • How is history made? What stories get told, what objects are collected and how is an exhibit created? Explore the Vancouver history exhibits through the eyes of a museum curator. Then create your own display with real artefacts from Vancouver's history.
  • Sleep with the mummy! Take on the role of an archaeologist digging for artifacts from ancient Egypt. Explore the Museum by flashlight to solve the mystery of the museum's curse.
  • Create an animated historical film on the Great Vancouver Fire, the Gold Rush, the Mummy Panechates, or the 1907 Anti-Asian Riots. Work cooperatively with professional animators to storyboard the plot, create and animate characters, add dialogue and sound effects. You'll have a finished product at the end of the day. Check our website to see student films. A partnership of Reel 2 Real and the Vancouver Museum.
  • Learn about Ancient Egypt by role-playing archaeologists. Excavate and examine Egyptian artifacts, build a pyramid and see a real Egyptian mummy.
