Our Field Trips

  • Students visit the Pebble Beach Nature Reserve where they are immersed in the rich complexity of a mature forest. Here they learn about the key components of a healthy forest ecosystem. Then students are introduced to a young industrial forest plantation where they explore how the simplified and degraded area differs from the mature forest. The program finishes with a tour through an active forest restoration site where we are helping to transform the plantation into a healthy diverse forest. Students are invited to participate in the restoration process, creating new habitat using our unique and safe hand-powered techniques.
  • What are salmonids and where do streams come from? Students are introduced to the concept of a 'watershed'. Participants discover that ecosystems are connected by the flow of water, and that human activities on land affect the lives of animals and fish downstream. From Laughlin Lake, down salmon-restored Greig Creek, to the ocean at Retreat Cove, participants use scientific methods to evaluate stream health and to collect and survey insects. They then determine the quality of the stream as habitat for salmonids. Fosters watershed awareness and stewardship.
  • Discover the wonders of wetlands at our recently purchased Great Beaver Swamp property which adjoins the Pebble Beach Reserve. The wetland is maintained by beaver activity and contains a beaver lodge, rare red-legged frog, rough-skinned newt and their associated habitats. Students study the function of the wetland and link its health to the health of the watershed as a whole. Participants learn about the unique adaptations of wetland plants, search for animal clues and investigate aquatic insects.
  • Are sea anemones animals or plants? Did you know that a chiton has teeth harder than some types of steel? Here are questions that will trigger everybody's curiousity. Montague Harbour Provincial Park is an ideal location for a day of exploration. Participants discover the intertidal zone, encounter a coastal forest and observe the underwater world at the floating Nature House. A midden also captures participants' imaginations as they visualize First Nations' life thousands of years ago.
