Our Field Trips

  • The Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre (SLCC) is located in Whistler. Admission at the SLCC includes what we call the Exhibit Tour; a comprehensive authentic experience. The exhibit tour begins with the Chief Jimmy Jimmy paticipatory dance. Students are encouraged to participate with rattles and to join the dance. Following this traditional welcome, students enter our 80-seat theatre to watch a spectacular and educational 15-minute film, highlighting the traditional territories, historical and modern cultures of the Squamish and Lil'wat Nations. After the film students join their Aboriginal guide on a museum and exhibit tour. The tour includes historical events, territory maps, traditional dwellings and how they met shelter needs, how canoes were crafted to meet transportation needs, regalia, identity, society and culture; to name a few learning objectives. This tour can be customized to suit different age groups. A scavenger hunt, where children have to follow clues to find answers in the exhibits is an example of a organized self guided tour option. After the tour or scavenger hunt students will make a tradtional craft in our cedar longhouse and engage in storytelling with their Squamish and Lil'wat hosts.
