Our Field Trips

  • Exploring the symmetry of landscape, architecture, cycles of life and their relationships to the spiritual and natural worlds, artists Eliza Au and Ying-Yueh Chuang collaborate to alter the Art Gallery at Evergreen with beautifully expressive ceramic and mixed-media installations. In the studio: Taking inspiration from the exhibition, students will use clay to create their own expressions of symmetry.
  • Internationally recognized, Vancouver-based artist Bratsa Bonifacho explores tensions existent in contemporary digital society, global politics, environmental threats and struggles within. He states: "I communicate and express essentially non-verbal thoughts and emotions abstractly, within thediscipline of formalism- through colour and shape, gesture and surface." Guest Curator, Ann Rosenberg. In the studio: Students will use paint, collage and stamps to explore language and symbols and to create their own large-scale, colourful, Bonifacho-inspired paintings.
  • This annual juried exhibition features exceptionally talented Grade Twelve art students. Always a favourite with the community, this 15th annual show is packed with a huge variety of art. In the studio: Bring your students to the Art Gallery at Evergreen to expand their artistic knowledge and skills in still-life drawing using various media. Perhaps they will be inspired to become a part of Emerging Talent in the years to come!
  • The Art Gallery at Evergreen welcomes the 13th annual KOVAN exhibition featuring eighteen Korean photographers. This year, KOVAN moves to the main gallery with an expanded show of work created by a team of serious photographers who mentor the less experienced members of their group. In the studio: Taking inspiration from photographic landscape and the winter season, students will crete a mixed media landscape comprised of painting, photography and collage.
  • Gregg Simpson has been a fixture of the Vancouver art since since the 1960s. He combines surrealism and abstration to create a fusion of figure and landscape which arises directly from the visceral process of mark making and automatism. The exhibition features large-scale paintings from his recent body of work. In the studio: Students will explore abstract painting along with pattern and surrealist techniques such as 'automatic' painting and drawing to explore and expose their imaginations and inner thoughts.
  • This exhibition features Kwikwetlem First Nation cultural objects and regalia, contemporary and archival documentation and contemporary Coast Salish art, including works by Jody Broomfield, Darlene Gait and Fred Hulbert. It explores the importance of the salmon in Coast Salish culture, including Kwikwetlem First Nation’s efforts to return sockeye to the Coquitlam Lake and River. It will also showcase the band’s other initiatives to renew their cultural practices, including a canoe building project featured in the film Te Sleq’alquels te Slexwelh, “The Journey of the Canoe.” This is the first public exhibition focused on Kwikwetlem First Nation. In the studio: After viewing the exhibition and film, students will create salmon foil carvings (foil embossing) to apprecaite salmon's importance to BC, the First Nations peoples and our environment while learning new artistic techniques. Their work can be used to create a collaborative mural project in your classroom or school.
  • Instructors Gay Mitchell studied at Vancouver School of Art, University of British Columbia, University of Victoria, Camosun College and Regent College. In 1982 she received a BA in education at UBC. With previous studios in Victoria and Vancouver, Gay now lives in Coquitlam where she has a studio at Esplanade in Port Moody. She teaches workshops and classes at Place des Arts in Port Moody. She teaches workshops and classes at Place des Arts, Port Moody Art Centre and Evergreen Cultural Centre. Gay also adjudicates and mentors emerging artists. Her work is displayed locally and internationally in group and solo shows. Wendy Anderson A talented freelance artist, designer and art educator, Wendy Anderson is a graduate of the Bachelor of Design Program at the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary. Wendy is adept at engaging students of all levels, sharing her passion and knowledge of visual arts and the creative process. A five year veteran of the Arts Education Program, Wendy is also an instructor with “Learning Through the Arts” a program of the Royal Conservatory of Music, Vancouver. Performing Arts Michael Charrois A professional actor (Equity, UBCP/Actra), Michael has been teaching drama classes for ages 5 to adult for over 20 years. Michael studied acting, playwriting and directing at the University of Alberta and the Banff School of Fine Arts and he has taught drama classes for adults at the Vancouver School Board Continuing Education, teens at the Burr Theatre and Fringe Theatre Adventures as well as kids of all ages for a decade at the Stage Polaris Academy of Drama. Michael has performed in hundreds of productions on stage, screen, radio and the street, over a dozen of his plays have been produced and if you Google him, he shows up as the guy who says “ They went that’a way!” in Clint Eastwood’s Academy Award-winning film Unforgiven. Mandy Tulloch Mandy studied Acting/Dance/Production at the Barbara Speaks Stage School in London England along with Dance at George Brown College. A Professional Actor (Equity/Actra/UBCP/British Equity) Mandy has appeared in over a hundred commercials world wide, had both Lead and Principal status in many TV/Film productions as well as musical theatre, pantomime and drama on stage in both England and Canada. “Having had the training from a very young age, I am thrilled to be able to pass some of this along to the children I teach, I truly understand what they are thinking and feeling having been there myself!” Corina Akeson Corina is a professional actor working primarily in Theatre, but also works in voice over, Film and Television. She is a honours graduate of Studio 58, the professional theatre training program at Langara College and a member of Cor Departure Physical Theatre, Pacific Theatre, Mortal Coil and is the performer of the many voices in the Fun With Composers classical music education program CD’s. Corina has been instructing drama sessions with the Evergreen Cultural Centre since 2004. During sessions at the Evergreen, Corina likes to put an emphasis on abstract sound & movement as a source for inspiration, but also as a jumping point for physical storytelling and character work.
  • Schools In The Community-Live Performances For Your Audiences.Grades K-12. Cost $2 per person. Schools in the Community is a funding program through ArtsStart in Schools that supports arts programming in the community to young audiences. The program encourages the presentation and promotion of live professional performers and musicians from all over Canada.   • Chinese Perspectives In Art Instructor Arabel Luk will lead this experiential visual arts workshop. Cross-cultural discovery enables students to create a hands-on project in the art studio, while gaining insight into Chinese art and culture. Arabel Luk holds a Bachelor of Education degree with teaching certificates in Art, English and Geography and has a post graduate diploma in Special Education. Visual art workshops introduces students in grades K-12 to the exciting world of art through dynamic and changing exhibitions in the Art Gallery. Each workshop is led by a professional art educator and includes a Gallery Tour and hands on studio activity.
