Overnight - Renewable Energy in Action (Gr.4+)

Program Description

Learn about energy sustainability and why it matters, and have fun in nature at the same time!

Students will gain experience and knowledge of solar photovoltaics, thermal solar, micro-hydro and micro-wind and will apply them in a real-world context through building projects and hands-on demonstrations.

During our new Renewable Energy in Action overnight program, students will develop practical science skills while working in nature. By exploring the beautiful Millard Learning Centre with hand-held measuring devices, participants will learn about how energy flows through nature, while gaining an understanding of the underlying physical and mathematical principles.

Students will work together to install a small water turbine in a seasonal creek—or in a tidal current—and get a hands-on understanding of kinetic energy, electricity, energy storage, and technology. 

In an exciting game format, students will compete (and cooperate) with different technologies to discover the advantages of mini-grids and small-scale non-centralized energy distribution. 

Throughout the two-day program, they’ll take measurements, record data, build energy projects and learn to see how energy is all around us—and how we can harness it for a sustainable future. 

Together, participants will build solar-powered USB charger, and take home a small pre-built one for themselves, along with a resource package to help them continue learning—and share their knowledge in their own communities. 

This program will empower participants to understand that there are renewable sources of energy all around us— and that they can be developed with the future of the natural world in mind.

    • Program Fee Bursary: For one-day programs we can provide up to a $12 bursary per student toward program fees. For multi-day programs, the amount we grant is based on the organization’s need, and may cover up to 30% of program costs.
    • Travel Bursary: We can provide a travel bursary for up to 100% of your bus transportation on Galiano Island.
    Additional Notes

    This program is offered on Galiano Island, British-Columbia.

    Galiano Island is located midway between Vancouver and Victoria in the beautiful Strait of Georgia. It is part of the Southern Gulf Islands and has a population of approximately 1000 people.

    As such, it is the perfect location for outdoor, environmental education. Galiano Island is easily accessible by ferry from Tsawwassen terminal on the mainland or from Swartz Bay terminal on Vancouver Island.
