Program Description

Mondays | October 7, 2019 - June 15, 2020

Discover the interwoven worlds of math and art throughout history and explore how math inspires art in this unique outreach program geared towards secondary students. Using tessellations as a foundation, variations upon each workshop caters to specific grade levels. Each workshop explores traditional design elements represented in Coast Salish contemporary art, and examines artists who use tessellations in their work.

Workshop 1: grade 7-8 classes learn about basic translation tessellations, the connection to translation math, as well as the history behind how math inspires artmaking.

Workshop 2: grade 9 & grade 10/11 classes will learn about proportional reasoning and the basic connection between math and art using tessellations as a starting point.

Workshop 3: foundation of math 11, pre-calculus 11/12 classes will learn about modelling with equations while exploring tessellations and traditional shapes utilized by Coast Salish artists.

Workshop 1 | Grade 8
Learn about basic translation tessellations, the connection

Workshop 3 | Grade 11-12
Learn about modelling curves in art works with equations, such as
quadratic and radical equations, while exploring tesselations and
traditional shapes utilized by Coast Salish artists.
