Mission

Program Description & Details

In our changing world, teaching ethics has become increasing important in creating responsible global citizens. The new curriculum asks students to make ethical judgements about the past and evaluate the limitations of drawing direct lessons from history.  One approach is to directly compare modern codes of ethics with historical codes from period sources. Studying prescribed codes of ethics from medieval chivalric manuscripts, such as the Book of Chivalry by Geffroi de Charny, and The Flower of Battle by Fiore dei Liberi, helps students examine their own codes of ethics and understand the pitfalls of dubious translations. But chivalry is essentially the ethics of swordfighting, and the best way to learn this is by swinging a sword. This exciting workshop combines hands on swordplay experience for kinesthetic learners with interpretation of historical manuscripts to reach multiple intelligences.

Come on a journey through time, and learn about the martial history of knights and duellists.

Far from armoured brutes wildly hacking and smashing their enemies, the knights and duellists of the middle ages and renaissance were highly trained martial artists.  Skilled not only with swords, but also with daggers and spears, in and out of armour, on foot and on horseback.

A team of presenters from the Academie Duello will host your students, or travel to your school.  And over the course of an hour describe the martial arts of medieval and renaissance Italy with live demonstartions, a recreation of a medieval judicial duel, and a Q&A period at the end of the presentation.

Swordplay is a great special program to offer as part of your physical education classes as a single session or an ongoing series. We combine historical swordplay skills with modern physical conditioning techniques in a way that will excite your kids to move. We have had great results engaging students who usually have a hard time in phys.ed. and have found that even push-ups are exciting when swordplay is the reward.

The BC Provincial Coalition was established in 2013 with the overarching goal of showing young people in BC that they can enjoy time spent outdoors and learn more about the different uses of BC’s forests, including wood products, jobs, recreation and spiritual values. We provide field trip opportunities, as resources allow, to inform your students about topics relating to forestry, forests and the forest environment in BC. The Coalition can also offer you a number of resources including handouts, giveaways, videos and speakers to bring the forest to your classroom whether your class is in a rural or urban school.

For the BC Field Trips Fair, two field trips are available. One will be to the District of Mission Tree Farm and the other to the operations in the Fraser Valley of a forest company.

Program Description & Details

From the Bronze Age to the First World War, the sword has a rich and diverse history in Europe.

Come to Academie Duello's downtown studio and take a tour through our museuem, where students will spend an hour learning about the evolution of the sword from simple bronze age knives, to the knightly longsword, to the slender rapier, all the way to the sabres issued to cavalry regiments in the first world war.  There will also be a look at the way the fighting manual changed, with reproductions and first edition manuscripts, and a chance to try on armour too!

After a short break and chance to handle some swords and armour, students will take to the floor under the tutelage of a senior instructor and an assistant, and learn some swordplay!  The lesson will be an hour long, and will cover the basics of stance, movement, attack, and defence, and will conclude with a fencing bout between the instructors.

Do your students have challenging questions about space science and astronomy? We might have the answers! Connect your students with our staff so we can share their passion and knowledge with them through a 45-minute video Skype session. Your virtual field trip will include a short demonstration related to one of the themes below and a Q & A session with our staff.

A Day in a Dangerous Place Called Space

This video Skype presentation introduces students to the world of the International Space Station where astronauts live and work. We investigate the differences between living and working on Earth versus the microgravity environment of the ISS and highlight the challenges involved in exploring the extreme environment of space. Available Monday to Friday 8:30am - 10:00am (Pacific Standard Time).

Let's Talk about the Universe

For a more in-depth look at the science of astronomy, our curious staff are ready for your questions. From black holes to dark matter, to the origins of the Universe, we can customize a session based on your learning objectives and the topics that you're most interested in. Available anytime.
