THEATRE AND VISUAL ARTS FOR GRADES 1-7

This innovative program explores the theme of voyages through theatre and visual arts. An immersive day of arts activities helps students in grades 1-7 develop critical thinking skills, explore creative expression, and better understand the world they live in.

During this one-day virtual field trip, students are given the supplies to craft an artistic interpretation or response during a number of thematically linked arts classes. For the 2020-21 school year, Arts Umbrella offers this program as a virtual field trip through Microsoft Teams. In order to participate, classrooms must have: Internet, Microsoft Teams, laptop with a webcam, projector and projector screen, and external speakers. Supplies are provided for by Arts Umbrella and will dropped off to school offices. Please note that we are only able to provide this online experience to elementary schools in Vancouver, North Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond and New Westminster.

To apply for programming, please email Kelsey Lee, Coordinator, Vancouver Commuity Programs at klee@artsumbrella.com and include "Shaw Creative Journeys Program" in the subject line. Schools in areas demonstrating high economic, social, and cultural vulnerability will be prioritized, as well as on fair rotation. Successful applicants will be notified in 2-5 business days.

Get ready: We will touch soil, kiss goats, listen to the bees buzzing, pet chickens, smell horses and taste veggies right from the market gardens! So much fun!! Besides our hands-on teaching style, we love getting into juicy discussions about agricultural practices, ecosystems, food security, sustainability... Throughout the Farm Field Trip, hands-on experimentation and discussions will complete your students' learnings in Environmental and Social Sciences curriculums.

Program Description & Details

This 30-minute live digital program is adapted from MOA’s onsite Archaeology of the Lower Fraser River program, which was designed in collaboration with archaeologists from the Laboratory of Archaeology at UBC. During the program students will discover the rich 9,000 year history of the First Nations communities along the Lower Fraser River.  With the help of volunteer facilitators during the live digital component, students will learn about the life ways, tools and technology used by First Nations people. This is done by observing and studying ancient cultural belongings using 3D and live images.  The live digital component is part of an overall unit plan, with prerequisite lessons that show the techniques used by archaeologists to find and identify the belongings.

Once you book this school program, you will receive the complete unit plan by email, along with confirmation of date and time of the live digital component.
