Field trips for school groups

BMSC is currently closed to visitors due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and will not accept clients until April 1, 2021, at the earliest.

Currently, though, we are offering virtual field trips through out BMSC Live! program. These are delivered through Zoom and cover many of our regular field trip topics: including, but not limited to Marine Invertebrate Diversity, Oceanography, intertidal ecology, Plankton studies, Seaweeds, and more!

Hands-on immersion learning experiences packed with field trips to beaches, boat trips, experimentation and observations in the laboratory, and presentations about marine science. Migration Studies

George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary

During this fall program designed for secondary grades, students will be introduced to the methodology of bird surveys, bird banding and how scientists have learned the migration routes of different species. The Lesser Snow Goose population and the conservation and management of the Sanctuary habitat will be explored as examples of the outcomes of bird studies. The students will then be given a tour of the Sanctuary, with an emphasis on viewing large flocks of migratory birds with binoculars and data sheets.

Our Bones are Made of Salmon

Fraser River Discovery Centre

(Grades 4-7) Explore local Indigenous People's connections to the environment by comparing traditional salmon fishing tools, and learn how Aboriginal people preserve their culture from two local elders who share oral histories through a storytelling film.

This program is divided into:

Introduction to program, centre and rules Outside (5 minutes)
Salmon Origins Storytelling Film Theatre (20 minutes)
Introduction in Theatre: (10 minutes)
2 Stations (25 minutes)
- Salmon Fishing Tools and Methods (Hands-on inqury of traditional Indigenous fishing tools)
- Wind-drying Salmon (Exploration of the method used to dry salmon in the Fraser Canyon, and a workshop on sharpening traditional slate knives)
Conclusion Theatre (5 minutes)

Richmond Nature Park

Discover the subtle signs of autumn and spring in the Richmond Nature Park with a naturalist-led guided walk that covers touch, scent, sound and sight, and a visit to the Nature House. This is an out trip for preschool and elementary classes. Registration is open from August to June.

Legislative Assembly of British Columbia

The new Virtual Classroom program provides students with an opportunity to learn about the Legislative Assembly in a fun and engaging way from the comfort of their home computers or classroom. The interactive presentation is hosted by one of our Legislative Guides and includes lots of fun stories and many interesting photos of the Parliament Buildings from the time of its construction up to today.
