Program Description & Details

(Grades 2-5) Through experience and roleplay, students learn how industries take on the responsibility of spill clean-up on the Fraser River, and learn about their connections to the use of resources.

Key Messages:

  • We all have a responsibility to care for the environment.
  • Taking preventative steps is important for preventing accidents.
  • Currently, in Canada we all use materials that can be harmful if not used properly.
  • Companies try their best to be preventative and our government imposes rules on them to help, but we still must be prepared for the accidents that will inevitably happen.

This program is divided into:

  • Introduction Outside (10 minutes)
  • Puppet Show with Oscar (10 minutes)
  • Stations (20 minutes each)
    • Spill Response Drill (Role-play problem solving activity demonstrating the roles of different groups during an oil spill)
    • What Do We Use Oil For? (Exploratory activity investigating household objects made from oil)
    • Secret Item Game (Matching game and discussion about imports and exports in BC)
  • Conclusion (10 minutes)
