Program Description & Details

Learning Labs are like having the museum as a school for the day. This museum learning program is inquiry based, and staff-led. Museum staff will be working alongside classrooms, investigating big ideas with the galleries as a backdrop. The Learning Lab may include behind the scenes visits in order to deepen an understanding of the role of the museum as a site for research and learning. The times for when classes are at the museum for a Learning Lab are flexible, to align with the needs of the classroom.

Themes include: Governance and Beyond, Photography and Memory of the Gold Rush, The Numbers of Nature, The Case of the Cougar, Ethics: Dialogue and Debate, Simple Machines, Reading an Object, The Ceremonies and Science of Seasons...and many more. We also offer the option of a Let's Talk Learning Lab, which is customizable to the particular classes we work with.

Program Description & Details

This museum is dedicated to the history of The Canadian Scottish Regiment (Princess Mary's) from 1912 to the present.  It tells the story of Vancouver Island’s militia infantry unit through both peacetime and war, from the trenches of WWI to the conflict in Afghanistan. There are many displays including uniforms, badges, weapons, medals and other artifacts.  Though ideally suited for SS 11 and History 12 classes, all levels of Social Studies classes would find it interesting. There is no admission charge but visitors may leave a donation if they wish.  Take a virtual tour at: http://www.canadianscottishregiment.ca/index.php?area_id=1015&page_id=1093

The program emphasizes learning boat control so that paddlers will gain the confidence, skills and knowledge to be safe and have fun. The program starts with knowledge and skills necessary for “beachfront” paddling activities. It progresses to introduce the novice paddler to paddling with a partner and to introduce basic land and water rescue techniques. All groups are accompanied by coaches in the same ‘inflatable’ coach boats used for sailing programs. Small tours around parts of English Bay are included when conditions are suitable.

Program Description & Details

Coastal temperate rainforests are one of the world’s rarest ecosystems, comprising less than 0.1% of the earth’s surface. British Columbia is home to more than 25% of the earth's remaining old-growth temperate rainforests, with Clayoquot Sound containing the largest tracts of ancient rainforest on Vancouver Island. Our guided rainforest walks will provide you with a unique understanding of this globally significant ecosystem, from the impressive diversity of flora and fauna to the interconnections with the marine environment to the rich environmental and cultural history that defines the landscape to this day. The ancient rainforests of Clayoquot Sound provide a rare glimpse into the evolutionary potential of this magnificent coastal landscape. Our expert guides draw on both scientific and cultural perspectives to provide you with a strong understanding of what makes these rainforests so significant.

Program Description & Details

Our award-winning curriculum engages and stimulates students to connect the history of a young German immigrant family in Vancouver (between1880s-1920s) to their own and to reflect on immigration and social and cultural differences. The visit is split into 3 parts: architectural drawing (house and neighborhood), a tour of the house (during which children learn about the history of a family and of the city of Vancouver), and the discovery of unusual historical artifacts. This curriculum is particularly geared towards Grade 5 students, but can be easily adapted or used for other grades.
