Listen to the voices of BC mountaineers, analyze photographs of their expeditions and tools of the trade, and discover their role in wilderness conservation. This education kit investigates the relationship that the Indigenous people have had with local mountains, the scientific and technical advances made by mountaineers, the impact of Mountaineers on wilderness conservation, and how mountain experiences have influenced our cultural heritage. It is based upon the virtual exhibit of the same name (available in French and English).

Your students will:

  • Learn how people have interacted with the North Shore mountains over time.
  • Explore primary source evidence of mountaineering history in BC.
  • View primary source evidence and develop photo analysis skills.

Clip ‘n Climb is climbing walls meet theme park… an engaging and action packed environment that provides tons of healthy, challenging fun for everyone. We have over 25 unique climbing features all under one roof!

Following a 15 minute safety briefing and harness fitting your students will move into the climbing zone where they will climb for an hour, focussing on their fundamental movement skills and confidence in their own abilities to push the limits of their comfort zone. Clip ‘n Climb floor staff can also set challenges that will help to push student's limits.

Referencing works from the City's Permanent Art Collection, participants explore the progression of themes and techniques in contemporary Coast Salish art. Discussions on appropriation and use of copyrighted work will be discussed within this program. Students will finish the workshop by creating their own collagraph print.

In Sḵwx̱wú7mesh culture, the first item made of any art form is to be given away. During this workshop students will make two woven bracelets, the first will be given away as part of the upcoming opening of the new MONOVA: Museum of North Vancouver (planned for later in 2021) and the second is theirs to keep.

As this is a hands-on workshop, supplies will be provided for students and available for teachers to pick up from MONOVA: Archives of North Vancouver at 3203 Institute Road in Lynn Valley. Appointments are required. Please arrange a time to pick up the supplies when registering for the workshop. .

COVID-safety: All weaving kits will have been quarantined for three days prior to distribution.

Your students will:

  • Learn Coast Salish teachings around wool weaving.
  • See how weaving is done and try making their own woven bracelet.
  • Find out about the cultural importance of giving and share their work with their community.

Join us in exploring the complexity of the BC coastline. Students are immersed in ideas of interconnection, ecosystems, water cycles, and shoreline wildlife, inspired by works from the City of Burnaby's Permanent Collection. Using watercolour, drawing, and collage, students develop individual mixed-media works.

Written to support distance learning but also useful for physically distanced teaching, a Tech-Up Learning Kit contains resources for both synchronous and/or asynchronous lessons. The teacher guide walks you through leading student activities over a series of sessions of approximately 30-45 minutes. Student activities are handouts for students to work through on their own as assigned, according to your own timeline and discretion.

In these activities, learners in Grades 4-6 will explore how binary code can be used to represent images while exploring reflections and transformations. They will be invited to share their binary code with their peers and work from each other’s codes. They will start with binary code for simple two-toned images and then work their way into coding four-toned images with possible extensions into how all colours are coded in binary for computers to use.

This kit contains resources for both synchronous and asynchronous lessons.

What animals are hiding within the garden walls? Our Garden is filled with animals, both real and symbolic. Through fun and interactive activities, students will explore the Garden and learn about the cultural significance of certain animals. 

The program ends with the students making an animal-themed craft to take home.

Learn about the objects, stories and lives of Chinese immigrants and those they interacted with in early Vancouver.

This program is a perfect resource for classroom studies on Chinese immigration to Canada. Students will discuss the issues surrounding early Chinese immigration, watch a short video, look through our immigration suitcases and use critical thinking skills to draw conclusions and create a short presentation. 

This program pairs very well with our Chinatown Walking Tour, exploring the architecture and stories from the early days of Chinatown as well as the vibrant community it is today.

Please note this program takes place inside the Ming Dymasty Scholar's Garden but does not include a Garden Tour. Garden Tours can be booked as a separate add-on.

Crossing Borders, Removing Barriers is a free resource for teachers.

Low Yuet Wing was the first of the Lowe family to arrive in Canada in 1913 from Toishan, Guanghai, China. Without any family abroad, he sailed across the Pacific, likely with mixed emotions of fear and excitement. As the Gold Rush of the 1870’s generated lots of hope for him escaping poverty and war in China, the allure of opportunity in the West (known as “Gum Shan” or “gold mountain”) was very appealing as he was sent abroad to work on the Canadian Pacific Railway.”

Based on the real life story of the Great Grandfather of Lorraine Lowe, Executive Director of Dr Sun Yat Sen Classical Chinese Garden, it highlights issues surrounding early Chinese immigration to Canada as experienced through his eyes.

This resource is based around the BC Social Studies curriculum and is aimed at Grade 5 level but with options for extension questions for higher grades.
