Each year, thousands of children are introduced to the wonders of nature through school programs at the Richmond Nature Park. Due to COVID-19, brand new virtual programs have been developed to offer a new, virtual learning experience. 

Wildlife in Your Classroom is designed for students in Kindergarten through Grade 4.  Interactive presentations include activities, demonstrations, taxidermy, multimedia visuals and a Q & A session with the naturalist, if time permits.

"Why Do Animals Live in My Neighbourhood?" 

Learn about the basic needs that all animals have, their adaptations to survive, why they live in our neighbourhoods and how we can co-exist with them. Recommended for Grades 1-4.

Educators have a choice of two different Wildlife in Your Classroom programs.

Register for one or both programs!

2. Why Do Animals Live in My Neighbourhood? - Raccoons and Snow Geese

$85/class (max. 24 students and 2-4 adults)

Technology/Equipment requirements:
Strong internet connection and access to a video/sound system. We recommend connecting your laptop to a smartboard or a projector and ensuring the speakers are enabled to provide an optimal experience.

FRDC is continuing to support schools during this pandemic with our newest offer: online school programs! Hosted through video conference software, an FRDC educator will lead your students through a fully interactive program, engaging them with the material by utilizing the latest tools in online and remote education.

Let’s Design a Cleaner City is an online program that empowers students to solve real world problems. In this program, students expand their knowledge of urban challenges by learning about major sources of urban and industrial pollution. Students will then use the design thinking process to imagine and create a cleaner city.

To participate in these programs, you will need:

• A stable internet connection.
• A device for each student (laptop, tablet, or chromebook, etc) with a stable internet connection. They will use this throughout the program for the interactive activities.
• The ability to join the video conference with the FRDC educator. This can be done one of two ways: the teacher can join the video conference and project it with sound for the whole class to view; or each student can join on their device with headphones.

Students are invited on a tour through the current exhibit, followed by a hands-on art workshop. This program is offered in person and online. There is limited program capacity for in person.

Participants are challenged through cultivated learning, close observation and thoughtful discussions about the art featured in the gallery exhibit. Key concepts and new artistic modes of creation come to life! Suitable for Grades K-12!

Book a digital "visit" to the Nikkei National Museum for your class! Learn about Japanese Canadian history and culture through virtual exhibit tours and stories from our elders. A Nikkei National Museum facilitator will guide you via your video call platform of choice. Programs run 30 or 60 minutes and can run on multiple days. All our Farm Field Trips start with an interactive and enthusiastic exploration of the farm. Get ready: We will touch soil, kiss goats, listen to the bees buzzing, pet chickens, smell horses and taste veggies right from the market gardens! So much fun!! Besides our hands-on teaching style, we love getting into juicy discussions about agricultural practices, ecosystems, food security, sustainability... Throughout the Farm Field Trip, hands-on experimentation and discussions will complete your students' learnings in Environmental and Social Sciences curriculums. 

- Fun and engaging introduction to the farm, its gardens, animals and farmers.
- Stimulating the 5 senses - experimental learning is the core of our pedagogy for all ages!
- Adapting to the age range and request, the farm educator can relate to “the bigger picture” in terms of farming technics, agro- ecosystems, food systems and/or local & global ecosystems.

Longer field trips are available. All field trips can be tailored to your learning plan requirements.
