This program is designed for the young visitors (kindergarten up to Grade 2). Children will be provided with a one-hour group tour of the Sanctuary wetlands and trails, exploring the importance of water under the guidance of our biologist. At the discretion of the leader and teacher, this may be extended to 1.5 hours. The Sanctuary is a colourful place to visit in the fall to learn about our friendly ducks and chickadees, fascinating spiders and other waterbirds and wildlife.

Program Description & Details

This program is designed for the young visitors (pre-school and kindergarten up to Grade 2). Children will be provided with a one-hour group tour of the Sanctuary wetlands, exploring nature under the guidance of our biologist. At the discretion of the leader and teacher, this may be extended to 1.5 hours.The Sanctuary is a noisy place in the spring, with birds getting ready for migration, nesting or in the process of building nests. Children will learn about bird behavior, the process of building nests and how we need to be careful not to disturb the birds during this important process.

The City Analyst has gone missing! It’s up to your team of detectives to solve the case. Looking at all the collected material, including crime scene, impressions and DNA evidence, piece together the connections between the suspects and the sequence of events leading up to our Analyst’s kidnapping. Can you save our City Analyst and uncover the suspect’s motive?

This program is ideal for classes studying the Canadian justice system, policing, and forensic methods.

Program Description & Details

How can we learn from cultural belongings and artworks? What can these works reveal about the people connected to them?

In this program, students will enjoy a guided gallery tour spotlighting belongings and artworks that embody rich, diverse stories and histories. Students will be invited to make observations, inferences, and reflections about how these works inspire learning and inquiry. Following the tour, students will visit the MOA Learning Lab and engage in a hands-on activity of the teacher’s choosing.

Teachers can choose either:

  • An artmaking activity where students reflect on how their personal belongings represent their own stories, histories and experiences.
  • An object-based learning activity where students investigate belongings from the touchable teaching collection.

Life in the Trenches (grades 4-12) Tour a CPR station and reflect on the impact of WWI and life in the trenches. Visit the Centennial McKnight Trench under construction on the Museum grounds. A tour of the Centennial McKnight trench is included and dependent on conditions. Activities include scavenger hunt and writing a letter about life in the ‘trenches’. This 75 minute program engages and develops the students abilities to reflect on difficult times and the sacrifices that soldiers made for Canada. Activities and discussions bring awareness of the roles and impact WWI had on the soldiers and our community.

Program Description & Details

(Grades K-7) Assess the survival needs of white sturgeon with a special focus on evaluating human impacts on the environment. The program includes hands-on stations about sturgeon life cycle and anatomy, and a sturgeon survival game focused on the habitat needs of sturgeon in the Fraser River.

This program is divided into:

  • Introduction to the Centre and Program Content (5 minutes)
  • PowerPoint (15 minutes) 
  • Stations (20 minutes each)
    • Anatomy and Life Cycle (Explore the life cycle stages of the river sturgeon with our life sized model and perserved samples)
    • Sturgeon Survival Game (Consider the obstacles in the different stages of a sturgeons life with this consequence judgement game)
    • Station #3 is Age Dependent
      • Felt Board Habitat (K-2) (Explore and create a narrative story around the life of sturgeon)
      • Water Testing (2-3) (Use the scientific method to test a water sample taken by the class from our boardwalk)
      • Tagging Lesson (3-7) (Role-play as marine biologists, using the math inquiry that they would to learn more about sturgeon)
  • Conclusion, Theatre (10 minutes)

This discovery kit is perfect for those teachers and students that are interested in learning more about the Kootenay-Boundary’s plant and animal life. The kit includes five activities based around identifying local plants and animals, invasive species, and indigenous use. You even figure out how to measure a tree with a straw! This kit is suitable for kindergarten to grade 7, with curriculum links to Social Studies, Science, and Mathematics.

Program Description & Details

Step into the shoes of a farmer for a day at London Farm. This outdoor adventure is all about fun and learning how we give and take from nature, from past to present. Students will discover which fruits and vegetables that can grow in Richmond and why; find the best tool for planting potatoes; make some discoveries about chickens; and re-enact a busy-bee! Prepare for a program full of laughter, exploration, and a growing love for the earth. Each junior farmer will take home a small seed pot planted by themselves, ready to watch it grow, and be cared for.

For younger students in pre-school and kindergarten, a one-hour program will include an egg-citing egg hunt in a small area of the heritage farm.
