Learn what it was like to work at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery. In this interactive and fun exploration, participants will take a tour of the facilities, watch a film, visit our fish wall, and play an interactive game. This 90-minute program will introduce the people, jobs, and machinery of the cannery.

In this engaging  hands-on program, discover the steps to canning salmon through story-time and puzzles. A scavenger hunt along the canning line helps students work cooperatively to follow the process of canned salmon from the ocean to their dinner plate.

Explore the diverse work experiences and social challenges of Cannery workers from around the world in Cannery Stories.  

Early cannery workers faced discrimination based on race and gender inside and outside of the canneries. These workers fought that discrimination through various means, including letter writing, suing the government, volunteering in their communities, and acting as allies. 

Discover the jobs of several cannery workers through a tour of our Canning Line, and learn more about the challenges of one worker in our Cannery Store.

Examine traditional belongings of the First Nations and Inuit cultures in relation to food, clothing and shelter. Excavate belongings connected to the Coast Salish. Be a player in a life-sized board game and learn about the traditional belongings of the Inuit through the seasons.

Students come to know səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Chief Dan George through historical photographs, images of his belongings, video footage, and his writing. They discover how his acting career helped change the image of Indigenous people in the media and how his activism raised awareness of Indigenous rights in Canada.

Your students will:

  • Analyse primary source evidence to assess historical significance
  • Discuss the ‘Lament to Confederation’ and consider modern perspectives on the piece
  • Watch a unique video about Chief Dan George produced by the NVMA.

As a distinctive neighbourhood filled with cultural monuments and historic sites, Chinatown’s public places are a precious and integral part of the city. Yet the neighbourhood is evolving quickly and many heritage sites are starting to disappear. How might we imagine a future Chinatown that honours and protects its heritage while welcoming new ideas and communities? We’ll survey Chinatown’s past and present sites of cultural significance and invite students to imagine the neighbourhood’s next phase of growth and revitalization with a creative “vision board” activity.

Find out what life was like in this historic neighbourhood in the past and enjoy the traditional markets, family associations and fascinating places that still exist today. This is a unique opportunity to study Vancouver's Chinatown in place.

This is a popular, highly customizeable program and our expert facilitators are happy to work with you to acheive your learning objectives. Teachers have used this tour for supplementary learning in a range of subjects from Social Studies and English Language Arts to Urban Planning, Tourism and Asian Studies. A shorter version of this tour is available for younger students.
