Gathering food, establishing local government, getting an education – all were fundamental needs in a pioneer community. Students learn how settlers managed, and relate their experiences of contemporary living in Surrey, one of the fastest growing cities in Canada.

Secondary level students will critically analyze both archival and contemporary newspaper articles relating to aboriginal rights and land title in British Columbia. This program presents the story of native activism in the mid-twentieth century through the lens of one individual (Maisie Hurley, 1887-1962), founder of the Native Voice newspaper.

This program has been organized with the Squamish Nation Education Department and made possible in part through a grant from the Museums Assistance Program, Department of Canadian Heritage.

Students explore a Victorian holiday experience from their classroom. By creating vintage wooden crafts, exploring the Stewart’s late 1800s holiday traditions, other newcomer who lived on the farm, and learning about the diverse holiday celebrations of our community students will tie traditions of the past to our community today. Discover the importance of water as a finite resource and map out where your drinking water comes from. Students discuss different water sources and use a 3D model to discover the connection between people and water pollution while learning how to minimize their impact. Discover relief printmaking techniques, drawing and mixed-media, while exploring how printmakers portray cats, dogs, birds, and more.

Cultural Portraits

Investigate how an artist’s expression reflects their identity and culture and the role visual art plays in reflecting or challenging traditions.

Structures & Cities

Imagine, balance, construct, and combine materials to create an exciting mini-city. This program builds skills in architecture and design through a horizontal learning approach. 

Subtopic: First Nations of the Northwest Coast Culture (45-60 minutes, $135)

Gain a deeper understanding of First Nations’ traditional culture through Object-Based Learning. Examine belongings from the Pacific Northwest Coast and learn how First Nations Peoples met the basic needs of food, clothing, and shelter.*

Learn more about the seasonal cycle of traditional Inuit life through an interactive inquiry-based activity that focuses on Inuit belongings.
