Program Description & Details

Hosted through video conference software, an FRDC educator will lead your students through a fully interactive program, engaging them with the material by utilizing the latest tools in online and remote education. 

Join us as we journey down the river of stories from the headwaters to the mouth of the Fraser. Travelling along an interactive map, students will learn all about the Fraser River Basin through stories from the near and distant past. The program ends with a reflection on our place in this landscape, as students add their own story to the map. 

Curricular connections:

This program supports curricular competencies in English Language Arts as students engage actively as listeners, viewers and readers; create stories to deepen their awareness of self; and use oral storytelling processes. This program also supports competencies in Social Studies as students learn about cultural characteristics and ways of life of local First Peoples, and understand the significance of the Fraser River Basin to individuals and groups. This program incorporates the First Peoples Principles of Learning, specifically that learning is relational; recognizes the role of indigenous knowledge; is embedded in story; and requires exploration of one’s own identity. Further, this program supports students in the process of developing a positive personal and cultural identity.

To participate in these programs, you will need:

  • A device for each student (laptop, tablet, or chromebook, etc) with a stable internet connection. They will use this throughout the program for the interactive activities.

Let’s Design a Cleaner City is an online program that empowers students to solve real world problems. In this program, students expand their knowledge of urban challenges by learning about major sources of urban and industrial pollution. Students will then use the design thinking process to imagine and create a cleaner city.

Join us in exploring the complexity of the BC coastline. Students are immersed in ideas of interconnection, ecosystems, water cycles and shoreline wildlife, inspired by works from the City of Burnaby's Permanent Collection. Using watercolour, drawing, and collage, students develop individual mixed-media works.

All our Farm Field Trips start with an interactive and enthusiastic exploration of the farm. Get ready: We will touch soil, kiss goats, listen to the bees buzzing, pet chickens, smell horses and taste veggies right from the market gardens! So much fun!! Besides our hands-on teaching style, we love getting into juicy discussions about agricultural practices, ecosystems, food security, sustainability... Throughout the Farm Field Trip, hands-on experimentation and discussions will complete your students' learnings in Environmental and Social Sciences curriculums. 

- Fun and engaging introduction to the farm, its gardens, animals and farmers.
- Stimulating the 5 senses - experimental learning is the core of our pedagogy for all ages!
- Adapting to the age range and request, the farm educator can relate to “the bigger picture” in terms of farming technics, agro- ecosystems, food systems and/or local & global ecosystems.

Program Description & Details

Be an archaeologist for a day! Discover the rich, 9,000-year history of the First Nations people who lived along the lower Fraser River by learning about their lifeways, tools and technologies. These 50-minute virtual programs were designed in collaboration with archaeologists from the Laboratory of Archaeology at UBC.

You can select between two digital program options:

  • Archaeology of the Lower Fraser River: Hunting + Fishing
  • Archaeology of the Lower Fraser River: Woodworking + Home Life

During the program students will discover the rich 9,000-year history of First Nation communities along the Lower Fraser River. With the help of volunteer facilitators during the live digital component, students will learn about the lifeways, tools and technology used by First Nations people in the past.  Students will be encouraged to think about how cultural belongings were made and used long ago. By understanding the deep knowledge First Nations required to create tools and belongings, students will enhance their respect for First Nations Cultures today.

The live digital session is part of an overall unit plan, with prerequisite lessons that show the techniques used by archaeologists to find and identify the belongings.

Join OWL (Orphaned Wildlife) Rehabilitation Society in this unique virtual experience to learn about the amazing species of raptors that call BC home, the features and adaptations that make them unique, how they respond to their environment, and about the dangers they face and how you can help. You also get the chance to meet some of OWL’s Raptor Ambassadors up close on camera! Each program will be focused to each grade level that is participating.

Have a specific topic in mind? We are more than happy to work with you to make the program you are looking for. Some popular requests include focusing on a specific species, such as owls or just hawks, life cycles, or food chains.

Program Description & Details

The Owls for Tots program is targeted to the 3-5 year age group. It is a very basic program that does not go into a lot of detail but rather is kept simple and direct. During the program the students will learn what makes a bird a bird, how owls are different from other birds, what species of owls are found in Southern BC, some of the dangers they face, and what the students can do to help.

There will be a short question and answer period at the end of the program.

The students will have the opportunity to meet a live owl during their classroom program. As we are working with animals, we cannot guarantee which bird will be available on the day of the program, so we unfortunately don’t take special requests.

Description : Cet atelier en ligne de 60 minutes est une présentation interactive sur les machines complexes et une chaîne de montage (la chaîne de mise en conserve) dirigée par le staff du Gulf of Georgia Cannery site historique et national. Les élèves joueront le rôle de «détectives» et exploreront trois machines complexes clés sur la chaine de mise en conserve. Le personnel posera des questions et donnera aux étudiants la possibilité de voter pour répondre, et des indices pour aider à remplir leur feuille de travail.

Come learn about the rich and vibrant history of the Indigenous peoples of Interior British Colombia. This tour largely focuses on the Indigenous Nation on whose land we reside, the Sinixt. We will consider Sinixt artifacts and culture while also examining the effects of colonization through our internal program titled "Sinixt & Colonial Contact: A Campaign of Extinction". Our tour will also guide students through activities examining stone artifacts while thinking critically about what we can learn through examination and what information has been lost through time.
