Program Description & Details

Bring your class to The Reach for an interactive field trip that connects art, history, and culture to the curriculum in fun and meaningful ways. Students explore exhibitions through guided tours, hands-on activities, and creative projects that encourage critical thinking and personal connections.

Tour Options:

  • Tour & Try – Exhibition tour + art activity (70–90 min) – $10/person

  • Tour Only – Exhibition tour (30–45 min) – $7/person

  • The Reach + Clearbrook Library – Tour & Try + Storytime and new Library Cards (2 hrs) – $10/person at The Reach, free at the Library

Exhibitions & Activities:

  • Parallax(e): Perspectives on the Canada–U.S. Border – Explore how borders shape communities, cultures, and ecosystems. Includes a scavenger hunt for added fun!

  • Collective Making – Get hands-on by painting your own “Personal Geography,” exploring Stó:lō waterways on an interactive map, and learning about the border through creative activities.

  • Voices of the Valley – Discover Abbotsford’s past through artifacts, photos, and documents. Interactive touchscreens let students dig into primary sources while exploring stories of how our community has grown and changed.

BMSC is currently closed to visitors due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and will not accept clients until April 1, 2021, at the earliest.

Currently, though, we are offering virtual field trips through out BMSC Live! program. These are delivered through Zoom and cover many of our regular field trip topics: including, but not limited to Marine Invertebrate Diversity, Oceanography, intertidal ecology, Plankton studies, Seaweeds, and more!

Hands-on immersion learning experiences packed with field trips to beaches, boat trips, experimentation and observations in the laboratory, and presentations about marine science. Program Description & Details

Come learn about the rich and vibrant history of the Indigenous peoples of Interior British Colombia. This tour largely focuses on the Indigenous Nation on whose land we reside, the Sinixt. We will consider Sinixt artifacts and culture while also examining the effects of colonization through our internal program titled "Sinixt & Colonial Contact: A Campaign of Extinction". Our tour will also guide students through activities examining stone artifacts while thinking critically about what we can learn through examination and what information has been lost through time.

Investigate the ways natural resources can move from local to global in Fishy Business! Communities depend on their members to be good citizens. Part of good citizenship involves understanding and managing natural resources in a sustainable manner. Tour our Canning Line to understand changes in food preservation, learn about how fish are adapted to their habitats, and play a game to see an example of how fisheries are managed.

Program Description & Details

Get a taste of local food and agriculture on the North Shore! The Edible Garden Project invites secondary classes to explore Loutet Farm while learning more about subjects such as food security, global supply chains, agroecology, climate change... and more! Students will explore the unique landscape of North Vancouver and our own role within these systems, alongside the EGP's role in the community through a guided tour and seasonal hands-on activities.

Note that there are several different areas of concentration available for this tour. Teachers can choose from the following themes: food security & global perspectives; environmental stewardship & sustainability; biodiversity; climate change; Indigenous perspectives.

Did you know that in Metro Vancouver tens of thousands of kgs of food is discarded every day? Food waste is a big problem.  Through this workshop students will learn the importance of food recycling and practical ways to reduce food waste, as well as glimpsing how families around the world eat.

September 15, 2025-June 25, 2026

Explore the world of landscape-inspired artwork through this engaging program. Using the forms of trees,  waterways, and mountains, students discuss ideas of landscape and place. Building on these ideas, participants use techniques of layering, colour mixing, and collage to create a ‘forest’ of trees.

Program Description & Details

Dig deeper into photosynthesis with our 2-hour, fully indoor Forest Lab program. Students will be scientists-for-a-day and will investigate leaf pigments and stomata of native deciduous and evergreen shrubs. Through a chromatography experiment and viewing leaf stomata with microscopes they will determine if our hypotheses are scientifically supported.

Dig deeper into the science of soil and decomposition with our 2-hour, mostly indoor Forest Lab program. As scientists-for-the-day students will investigate soil and the FBI (Fungi, Bacteria, and Invertebrates) vital for decomposition. We will wrap-up their program with an outdoor activity, or indoor story (by request).
