FREE EXHIBITION TOUR In Focus: The Holocaust through the VHEC Collection

Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre

The VHEC's teaching exhibition In Focus: The Holocaust through the VHEC Collection introduces students to the history of the Holocaust with reference to primary source artefacts belonging to Holocaust survivors and victims. Led by a VHEC museum educator, the exhibition tour covers topics such as pre-war Jewish life, antisemitism, the rise of Nazism, Jewish refugees, rescue, resistance and post-war life. Over 90 artefacts donated by local Holocaust survivors are on view in this exhibition, each of which tells a poignant and unique story of Jewish life during the Holocaust. Students are given the opportunity for hands-on examination of select artefacts including personal letters, toys, photos, propaganda and other items. Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden

These art activities are inspired by the symbolism and architecture of a Chinese garden and allow students to explore CHinese symolism and our beautiful leak windows to create artwors of their own. 

This activity can be adapted easily to the age of the students and the time available in class.

From Pollution To Solution

Fraser River Discovery Centre

(Grades 2-5) Examine different types of pollutants an where they come from, and evaluate how individual actions contribute to the health of the river.

This program is divided into:

  • Introduction to the Centre, Program and Rules (5 minutes)
  • PowerPoint Presentation (10 minutes)
  • Activities (25 minutes each)
    • Swim Like Fin board game.
    • Examine how plastic pollution affects the birds around the Fraser River Basin.
  • Video: Journey of the Blob (10 minutes)
  • Conclusion (5 minutes)

Garden Tour for Education groups

A Chinese Garden is so much more than a collection of rocks and plants. Enjoy a Grade-appropriate, interactive tour of the Garden and learn about Ming Dynasty family life, philosophy and arts. This tour lends itself to a variety of curriculum outcomes and our knowledgeable facilitators can adapt the tour to your learning objectives, student age or English language level.

Langley Environmental Partners Society

Discover the importance of water as a finite resource and map out where your drinking water comes from. Students discuss different water sources and use a 3D model to discover the connection between people and water pollution while learning how to minimize their impact.
