Soil and the Life Within

The Edible Garden Project

Did you know that soil is actually extremely rare? In this truly groundbreaking field trip, students will come away understanding the important differences between soil and dirt. They’ll dig deep into the properties and composition of soil, the amendments we add, and the benefits of supporting a healthy underground ecosystem where just one tablespoon could contain 50 billion microbes! We’ll find some of the larger invertebrates commonly found at Loutet Farm and investigate the cycle of compost on-site, where we build our own soil. Your day exploring one of the most species-rich habitats on earth will leave you with a newfound appreciation for the ground beneath your feet and inspiration for building and protecting it.

SOS: Save Our Species (grades 2-5)

Langley Environmental Partners Society

What are endangered species and do any call Langley home? Discover the creatures who are at risk within our community. Learn what life is like for a Great Blue Heron, Pacific Water Shrew, Salish Sucker, Oregon Forest Snail and other local endangered species. Gain an understanding of biodiversity and conservation science and build a snail hotel with recycled materials.

Squamish Community: Our People and Places Kit (Grades 3, 4, and 5)

North Vancouver Museum Archives- NOVAMA

It is said that ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’ but how do we actually learn from photographs?

Using images from the Archives of North Vancouver's collection, students will explore Squamish themes and stories. The photographs feature local landscapes and individuals. Students will learn to analyze each image and to record relevant observations while learning aspects of Squamish culture. Topics include family life, education and art. The Kit includes lesson plans which encourage team work, group discussion and critical thinking.

SQUAMISH COMMUNITY: OUR PEOPLE OUR PLACES KIT

North Vancouver Museum Archives- NOVAMA

Students explore and analyse archival photographs featuring Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) people and places chosen from an exhibit presented at the North Vancouver Museum & Archives (NVMA) in 2010. This was a shared project of the NVMA and the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation). The Squamish Elders and Language Authority chose these photos that represent local landscapes, the community and individuals, and contributed to exhibit research.

Your students will:

Recognize that the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) is an active community today on the North Shore.
Discover aspects of Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) history and culture through photos.
View primary source evidence and develop photo analysis skills.

Stories of Resilience and the Road to Reconciliation

Museum of Vancouver

Explore c̓əsnaʔəm: the city before the city through a scavenger hunt activity based on the Big Six Historical Thinking Concepts. Learn about the impact of colonization on the Musqueam community and their resiliency toward assimilative policies. Through Object-Based Learning, examine the impact of colonial policies on First Nations history, language, and culture and learn about our shared responsibility in the reconciliation process.

Storm Drain Marking

Lynn Canyon Ecology Centre

Help protect your backyard streams! Borrow a storm drain marking kit and stick a yellow fish beside the storm drains on your street. We have 4 kits available which each contain a mallet, fish decals, and a mini broom. The pavement must be completely dry for few days before and after the stickers are placed, which makes this a good summer activity. For more information, email ecocentre@dnv.org.

Stream Ecology - In Person

Lynn Canyon Ecology Centre

A wondrous world exists below the chilly waters of Lynn Creek. What’s living there? Most of the creatures in the creek are much smaller than salmon and trout. Invertebrates form the basis of the aquatic food chain. During this program, you’ll discover how aquatic invertebrates have adapted to, depend on, and survive in their environment. Students will identify aquatic invertebrates and use simple chemical tests to measure water quality in Lynn Creek.

Students discover the ecology of our local streams through hands-on investigation of a salmon habitat. LEPS staff meet your class in the field to conduct water quality testing, fish identification, and aquatic bug sampling.

Fresh Roots

Team Builds are a chance for students (and teachers and chaperones!) to really get their hands dirty helping our farmers grow Good Food for All. This program includes an introduction to Fresh Roots and the many things we do, and plenty of time to work on projects around the farm, from weeding to building. Exact projects will vary depending on the group and the needs of the farm.

Summit Snowshoe School

Sea to Sky Gondola

Winter sports are an important part of physical literacy, and our new Summit Snowshoe course is a fun introduction to this fast-growing sport. Students learn snowshoeing basics for health and fitness, including how to prepare for a snowshoe hike, snowshoeing safety and techniques, and then test their skills with games and a hike on our snowshoe trails. This activity can be combined with tubing.
