Program Description & Details

It is 1918, four years after the devastating rockslide at Hell’s Gate that blocked millions of Fraser River salmon from reaching their spawning grounds. Salmon stocks have plummeted, and the low stocks are threatening the future of the fishing industry. A commission of stakeholders has been called to determine how to help the species recover from this disaster.

Students will role play and work together to solve the problem. The 1914 Hell’s Gate rockslide and its consequences provide a historic example of the complexities of natural resource management that is still relevant today.

This program makes connections between all six Historical Thinking Principles; historical causes of today’s environmental concerns; and the shared history of BC, including topics of social justice, science, and Indigenous issues. The program takes a historical event and dramatizes it for relevant contemporary conversations that can be held in the classroom.

THIS WORKSHOP, OFFERED VIRTUALLY, WILL INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO THE BASICS OF SCRATCH AS THEY WORK TO CREATE AN INTERACTIVE GREETING CARD.

In this workshop we will start with a discussion around what coding is and why it’s an important skill to learn. We will then do a brief introduction to the Scratch website and review all of the features before we begin coding. Following an I do – We do – You do model, we will work towards building an interactive greeting card that will use motion, looks, sound, backgrounds, and events. Students will leave the workshop with a solid foundation of Scratch coding skills so that they can continue to experiment with their own ideas!

Explore at Home!

https://bardonthebeach.org/education/explore-at-home/

Although we can’t gather right now to experience Shakespeare through performance, there are other ways to discover the vast and varied worlds of Shakespeare! We’ve created these free resources to help you and your students playfully explore Shakespeare’s language, characters, imagery, and plays. Each resource includes a series of asynchronous activities that can be adapted to fit your class's needs.

Explore at Home is hosted on Google Classroom, and can be accessed with a free Google account. Please see our website for instructions on accessing the Classroom. New content is added regularly, so check back often!

Explore at Home is also a great resource for preparing or following up one of our FREE Bard in the (Virtual) Classroom sessions.

Happy exploring!
