Ahh! The great outdoors! With 144 acres of ocean-front property, lush rainforest and quiet creeks, YMCA Camp Elphinstone is an ideal location for learning in the great outdoors. Located on British Columbia's beautiful Sunshine Coast, YMCA Camp Elphinstone is just two kilometres north of the Langdale Ferry Terminal and a 40-minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver.

Through meaningful outdoor experiential learning, kids develop strong and healthy minds and bodies while they learn and grow with their classmates. Students are challenged outside the traditional classroom and benefit from hands-on learning as they explore the serene forests and rocky shoreline of beautiful YMCA Camp Elphinstone.

Programming is customized for each group and designed to fulfill BC Ministry of Education prescribed learning outcomes. Participants benefit from:

• Structured activities like our discovery hike or marine beach study that teach about marine wildlife or the ecosystem.
• Programming that focuses on skill development such as archery, orienteering or outdoor living skills.
• Activities like our high or low ropes courses that encourage leadership and team building.
• Water-based programming such as kayaking, canoeing and swimming.
• Games and sports with an emphasis on physical activitiy, strategy and teamwork.
• Interactive leadership sessions that focus on conflict resolution, group dynamics, public speaking and more.

This downloadable digital school program is adapted from MOA’s in-person Transforming Image school program and is designed for teachers to deliver in-person or online. Students will encounter examples of historical and contemporary Northwest Coast First Nations paintings and be introduced to the innovative Image Recovery Project. This school program includes slide presentations, activities, and resources for teachers to implement as they see fit.

This downloadable digital school program is adapted from MOA’s onsite Architecture: Museum as Muse school program and is designed for teachers to deliver in-person or online. Taking inspiration from museum architecture around the world, students will learn to actively sense, observe and respond to their built environments—and to cultural institutions—in new ways. This school program includes slide presentations, activities, and resources for teachers to implement as they see fit.

Enhance your visit to Britannia Mine Museum by adding on the 30 minute Homeschool Session Earthly Explorers. 

General admission gives you access to the guided underground tour, BOOM! show, gold panning and all the onsite exhibits. The cost to add on the Homeschool session Earthly Explorers’ to your general admission visit is $10 per person (Min of $50 payable if under 5 people). You can view Museum rates here.

Included in this price are the following:

• A 30 minute additional session with one of our educators focusing on Grade 5 Science and teaching the curriculum Big Idea “Earth materials change as they move through the rock cycle and can be used as natural resources.”
• Time to pick the brains of our interpreters on questions you may have about the topics you encounter on your visit.
• A support package to use onsite and in the classroom.

While we are not currently offering on-site school programs, school groups are welcome to visit the museum for a self-guided experience. There is a lot to discover! Worksheets to support and enhance your self-directed exploration can be emailed to teachers on request. 

Self-guided museum visits must be booked at least 10 days in advance to receive the discounted rate.

With onsite school programs on hold, we are offering teachers and homeschoolers alternate ways to bring the farm to the classroom. Inspire your students with an experience of farm life from home. We are taking some of the best activities from our onsite school programs and making them available to become part of your remote learning workplans.

Inside the waiting room of the Port Moody Station Museum you can find many old and beaten up suitcases. Each suitcase is filled with the contents of a person’s life.

The suitcases were created by student’s from Burnaby North Secondary. Their task was to imagine what an immigrant would bring on their journey to Canada.

The suitcases contain, necessities like clothes and shoes, but more importantly there are items of memory - pictures, letters, diaries. Items which provide safety and comfort.

Currently we all are forced into lock down. We self isolate to bring the curve down, together we all help to overcome this pandemic.

We are undertaking a personal journey, cut off from our normal busy lives.

Books provide us with endless places for our mind to travel, books can be companions during our isolation, books allow us to travel back and forward in time.
