Calling all Drama Teachers! Join us and our friends from the Arts Club Theatre Company for this series of FREE roundtable discussions for Drama Teachers and Teaching Artists.

After a full summer of online programs, many of us have experienced the adventure of adapting our theatre education programs for the digital space. We now invite our theatre education colleagues and enthusiasts to share their discoveries and brainstorm new strategies together. Every Thursday evening in October, we’ll gather on Zoom to discuss, spotlighting two new topics each week.

WHAT: WARM UP GAMES & ENSEMBLE BUILDING

• How do we gently engage young people who'd rather turn the cameras off? How can we adapt our circle games when there is no circle? How can we foster connection and community when we're communicating through technology?

WHEN: October 8th, 2020, from 4-5:30pm

WHAT: TRANSITIONS & GROUP DYNAMICS/FLOW

• How long can we sustain a group activity online? What role can breakout rooms play? How do we support individual expression for all participants? How can we incorporate off-screen activities with time on-screen?

WHEN: October 15th, 2020, from 4-5:30pm

WHAT: ACTING SKILLS & SCENE MAKING

• Which acting skills translate well to this medium? How do we identify and articulate those skills that transcend a specific medium? How do we support the participants' ingenuity in creating work on this platform?

WHAT: ONLINE PERFORMANCES & CELEBRATIONS

• What tools can we use to create an engaging digital performance in front of a live audience? How can we strengthen our online community celebrations (e.g. parties, ceremonies)?

WHAT: PHYSICAL DISTANCING & MASK WORK

• When we are together for classes and rehearsals, how do we follow public health guidelines? Can we look at physical distancing and wearing masks as artistic opportunities?

Beyond the Box is collaboratively organised and facilitated by the Education staff from Arts Club Theatre Company and Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival.

Bring an engaging, interactive experience with Shakespeare to your online classroom! In this session, a Bard Teaching Artist will look at a speech with your class, showing your students how they would work on the text as actors. This interactive close reading will pay attention to the different features of Shakespeare’s language that inform a performance. If time permits, the actor will demonstrate different ways of delivering the speech, with input from the students.

• Where: On your school’s preferred video conferencing platform. Bard Education may also be able to host the session on Zoom; please inquire.
• When: available school days, between the hours of 9 am – 4 pm
• Length: 45 minutes long
• Cost: FREE! (Workshops are valued at $125, and all fees are covered by the Bard Education Bursary Fund for the 2020/2021 school year)

Soil is much more than rocks and old leaves - it's a vibrant ecosystem. Since people walk on top of the soil, we often don't consider what's underneath. Your students will explore how soil is made, the layers of the soil, and the animals, plants, and fungi that both rely on and help create a healthy ecosystem.

Discover the differences between vertebrates and invertebrates. In this workshop, you’ll take a close-up look at invertebrates and then look at the interesting features of vertebrate skulls, bones, teeth, and claws. You’ll also learn about the adaptations that help temperate rainforest animals thrive in this cool, wet environment.

Visit us from your classroom or home and learn about Maillardville and Coquitlam. Book our Mackin House Tour and learn about Edwardian era homes. Learn about the history of transportation in Canada with our Fraser Mills Train Station and CP Rail Caboose Tour. Go back in time to Coquitlam in the 1940's and learn what life was like for those who stayed behind in Canada during WWII.

General admission gives you access to the guided underground tour, BOOM! show, gold panning and all the onsite exhibits. The cost to add on the Homeschool session Earthly Explorers’ to your general admission visit is $10 per person (Min of $50 payable if under 5 people). You can view Museum rates here.

• A 30 minute additional session with one of our educators focusing on Grade 5 Science and teaching the curriculum Big Idea “Earth materials change as they move through the rock cycle and can be used as natural resources.”
• Time to pick the brains of our interpreters on questions you may have about the topics you encounter on your visit.
• A support package to use onsite and in the classroom.

With onsite school programs on hold, we are offering teachers and homeschoolers alternate ways to bring the farm to the classroom. Inspire your students with an experience of farm life from home. We are taking some of the best activities from our onsite school programs and making them available to become part of your remote learning workplans.
