Explore c̓əsnaʔəm: the city before the city through a scavenger hunt activity based on the Big Six Historical Thinking Concepts. Learn about the impact of colonization on the Musqueam community and their resiliency toward assimilative policies. Through Object-Based Learning, examine the impact of colonial policies on First Nations history, language, and culture and learn about our shared responsibility in the reconciliation process.

These art activities are inspired by the symbolism and architecture of a Chinese garden and allow students to explore CHinese symolism and our beautiful leak windows to create artwors of their own. 

This activity can be adapted easily to the age of the students and the time available in class.

Join us in exploring the complexity of the BC coastline. Students are immersed in ideas of interconnection, ecosystems, water cycles and shoreline wildlife, inspired by works from the City of Burnaby's Permanent Collection. Using watercolour, drawing, and collage, students develop individual mixed-media works.

Curriculum Tie-ins: Art Education, Earth Science, Indigenous Art

Historic Stewart Farm is now offering live, virtual school programs. Without leaving your classroom,  an experienced costumed guide will lead your class on a virtual tour around the Farmhouse, providing curriculum current interpretation. Explore the history of local holiday celebrations, family roles, and how newcomers shaped the environment around them. This 60-minute program costs $53 and will be booked on a first-come, first-served basis. Programs are available for booking now and take place Dec 2 to 18, Wed-Fri, at 10:30am.

Please Note: We will be using the Microsoft Teams platform to deliver this program. To ensure a smooth program we require a technical ‘check-in’ prior to your scheduled program - we will discuss this with you upon booking. A projector, screen, and a laptop with speakers and microphone are required.

Hands On Activity Add-on:

A heritage craft activity is also available for an additional $25. The craft teaches students how to create their own wooden top, just like newcomer children in the past. This activity package must be picked up before your scheduled program and will be led by the heritage instructor after the program. The craft activity will take an additional 15-25 minutes after the program. 

Be an archaeologist for a day! Discover the rich, 9,000-year history of the First Nations people who lived along the lower Fraser River by learning about their lifeways, tools and technologies. These 50-minute virtual programs were designed in collaboration with archaeologists from the Laboratory of Archaeology at UBC.

You can select between two digital program options:

• Archaeology of the Lower Fraser River: Woodworking + Home Life

During the program students will discover the rich 9,000-year history of First Nation communities along the Lower Fraser River. With the help of volunteer facilitators during the live digital component, students will learn about the lifeways, tools and technology used by First Nations people in the past.  Students will be encouraged to think about how cultural belongings were made and used long ago. By understanding the deep knowledge First Nations required to create tools and belongings, students will enhance their respect for First Nations Cultures today.

The live digital session is part of an overall unit plan, with prerequisite lessons that show the techniques used by archaeologists to find and identify the belongings.

Description : Cet atelier en ligne de 60 minutes est une présentation interactive sur les machines complexes et une chaîne de montage (la chaîne de mise en conserve) dirigée par le staff du Gulf of Georgia Cannery site historique et national. Les élèves joueront le rôle de «détectives» et exploreront trois machines complexes clés sur la chaine de mise en conserve. Le personnel posera des questions et donnera aux étudiants la possibilité de voter pour répondre, et des indices pour aider à remplir leur feuille de travail.

Bonus: Un kit physique peut être emprunté pour une semaine sans frais supplémentaires. Il inclut des répliques en bois de machines simples. Le kit doit être récupéré au lieu historique national Gulf of Georgia Cannery à Steveston. Des instructions seront incluses pour aider les élèves à approfondir leurs connaissances sur la façon dont les machines fonctionnent.
