Students come to know səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Chief Dan George through historical photographs, images of his belongings, video footage, and his writing. They discover how his acting career helped change the image of Indigenous people in the media and how his activism raised awareness of Indigenous rights in Canada.

Students explore and analyse archival photographs featuring Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) people and places chosen from an exhibit presented at the North Vancouver Museum & Archives (NVMA) in 2010. This was a shared project of the NVMA and the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation). The Squamish Elders and Language Authority chose these photos that represent local landscapes, the community and individuals, and contributed to exhibit research.

Your students will:

  • Recognize that the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) is an active community today on the North Shore.
  • Discover aspects of Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) history and culture through photos.

Researched by Sḵwx̱wú7mesh author and language teacher Khelsilem with MONOVA staff members, this fully-illustrated, limited edition book, looks at the traditional and contemporary history and culture of both Nations. The Book and Teaching Package will be provided electronically. This program is available in French and English.

Title:  Talaysay's Talking Trees – Student Program (K to Grade 12)

Welcome to our Talaysay  TALKING TREES PROGRAM. 

Type of Program:  Student Indigenous Walking Tour - Ecology

Tour Description:  This is a walking tour in Stanley Park. Your Talaysay guides-ambassadors will take you on a forest walk and teach the rich stories and history of the land while you learn how the trees and plants are used by indigenous people for both food and medicine.  Learn to identify a variety of indigenous plants and tree species  so when you venture into the forest you too will know what is edible, medicinal and adaptable for technology.   Emphasis on Indigenous Ways of Knowing, Sustainable Practices and Ecology. 

Date of TourTuesday to Friday

Start Time:  10:00 am   End Time:  11:30 am    Duration:  1.5 hrs  We can book custom times between 9 am and 10:30 am for the morning tour and 12:00 pm and 1:30 pm for the Afternoon Tour.

Includes:  Guide-Ambassador-Instructor.  At times we have a co-guide, a trainer and or a trainee. The tour is rich with Indigenous stories and interpretation.  Students have the opportunity to discuss and ask questions during the tour and or in the last 15 minutes of the tour.  

Student Rate with 20 or more participants:  $18.00 pp plus gst (This Rate is for K to 12 Students Only). 

With 20+ students, 2 teachers or adult volunteers are complimentary.  When there are less than 20 students, the base rate is $360 plus gst $18.00.  Total:  $378.00 

Primary Location:  Stanley Park:

This tour meets at the Stanley Park bus loop which is accessible by car, taxi, bus or by foot. Our guide will meet you under the gazebo in the bus loop. Please note, if driving by car, the parking lot is all pay parking. If taking the public bus, it is the #19 bus to Stanley Park and it is the last stop.  
If traveling by school bus, the driver can drop the students off then park at the designated bus parking in Stanley Park.  
Please provide yourself plenty of time to arrive and find your guide.

Other Locations:  When planned in advance, our guides could travel to a forest area near your school.  Review of the site for safety, access and diversity in indgenous plants is required.

FRDC is continuing to support schools during this pandemic with our newest offer: online school programs! Hosted through video conference software, an FRDC educator will lead your students through a fully interactive program, engaging them with the material by utilizing the latest tools in online and remote education.

Let’s Design a Cleaner City is an online program that empowers students to solve real world problems. In this program, students expand their knowledge of urban challenges by learning about major sources of urban and industrial pollution. Students will then use the design thinking process to imagine and create a cleaner city.

To participate in these programs, you will need:

  • A stable internet connection.
  • A device for each student (laptop, tablet, or chromebook, etc) with a stable internet connection. They will use this throughout the program for the interactive activities.
  • The ability to join the video conference with the FRDC educator. This can be done one of two ways: the teacher can join the video conference and project it with sound for the whole class to view; or each student can join on their device with headphones.

Join us in exploring the complexity of the BC coastline. Students are immersed in ideas of interconnection, ecosystems, water cycles and shoreline wildlife, inspired by works from the City of Burnaby's Permanent Collection. Using watercolour, drawing, and collage, students develop individual mixed-media works.

Historic Stewart Farm is offering live, virtual school programs. Without leaving your classroom,  an experienced costumed guide will lead your class on a virtual Matterport tour around the Farmhouse, recently updated Pole Barn, and historic outbuildings while providing curriculum current interpretation. Explore the history of local community, immigration, family roles, and how newcomers shaped the environment around them. These programs work for both in-class, and blended groups - if some students or your whole class log-in from home.

Three programs are being offered for varying grade ranges:

Stories Shoots and Sprouts - Kindergarten - Grade 1

Dig, plant, discover! Learn about growing heritage vegetables and fruit through historical indoor and outdoor seasonal activities. Students get active as they explore the site, including the root cellar, garden, orchard, pole barn and farmhouse kitchen. A package will be provided for students to plant a Historic Stewart Farm heirloom seed in their classroom. 

Farm Kids - Grade 1 - Grade 2

Students travel back in time to the 1890s to live just like Surrey’s settler children did. They’ll learn how students in the past helped with family life, important chores around the site, and balanced all of this to get to school on time. Butter making supplies will be provided for classes.

Immigrant Perspectives - Grade 5 - Grade 6

Immigrants in turn-of-the-century Canada certainly faced some challenges. Students experience the cultural traditions of Scottish and Chinese settlers on the farm, and learn how culture, economy and technology influenced rural life in Surrey and across the country. A primary resouce package is provided about local history, immigration, and those who settled at the Historic Stewart Farm.

These 90-minute programs costs $94.80 and will be booked on a first-come, first-served basis between February and June 2021.

All our Farm Field Trips start with an interactive and enthusiastic exploration of the farm. Get ready: We will touch soil, kiss goats, listen to the bees buzzing, pet chickens, smell horses and taste veggies right from the market gardens! So much fun!! Besides our hands-on teaching style, we love getting into juicy discussions about agricultural practices, ecosystems, food security, sustainability... Throughout the Farm Field Trip, hands-on experimentation and discussions will complete your students' learnings in Environmental and Social Sciences curriculums. 

- Fun and engaging introduction to the farm, its gardens, animals and farmers.
- Stimulating the 5 senses - experimental learning is the core of our pedagogy for all ages!
- Adapting to the age range and request, the farm educator can relate to “the bigger picture” in terms of farming technics, agro- ecosystems, food systems and/or local & global ecosystems.

The teacher guide walks you through leading student activities over a series of sessions of approximately 30-45 minutes. Student activities are handouts for students to work through on their own as assigned, according to your own timeline and discretion.

In these activities, learners in Grades 4-6 will explore how parts of speech can be used to strengthen their understanding of variables.

Students will work towards writing their own Mad Lib Stories before using Scratch to code a Mad Lib story generator.

After a full summer of online programs, many of us have experienced the adventure of adapting our theatre education programs for the digital space. We now invite our theatre education colleagues and enthusiasts to share their discoveries and brainstorm new strategies together.
