Explore at Home!

https://bardonthebeach.org/education/explore-at-home/

Although we can’t gather right now to experience Shakespeare through performance, there are other ways to discover the vast and varied worlds of Shakespeare! We’ve created these free resources to help you and your students playfully explore Shakespeare’s language, characters, imagery, and plays. Each resource includes a series of asynchronous activities that can be adapted to fit your class's needs.

Explore at Home is hosted on Google Classroom, and can be accessed with a free Google account. Please see our website for instructions on accessing the Classroom. New content is added regularly, so check back often!

Explore at Home is also a great resource for preparing or following up one of our FREE Bard in the (Virtual) Classroom sessions.

Happy exploring!

Discover the VSO's Virtual Learning Hub
https://www.vancouversymphony.ca/virtual-learning/

We are pleased to bring you and your family an assortment of fun and engaging musical learning experiences! The VSO Virtual Learning Hub offers a unique opportunity to learn directly from members of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra as they share personal insights and musical gems.

Whether your children miss their school band, music class, or other ensembles, or you would just like to supplement home learning with the joy of music, the Virtual Learning Hub has something for all ages and interests.

"I've had the privilege of experiencing the VSO Virtual Learning Hub and find it to be a wonderful resource for kids of all ages learning to play an instrument.  It's clear that our fine VSO musicians have really thought about how to bring music to life in their videos. I encourage parents and teachers to share the hub with young musicians. What a great way to bring a world-class musician into your own home."

— Santa J. OnoPresident & Vice-Chancellor, UBC

How Does It Work?

At the VSO Virtual Learning website, there is a combination of free and paid content with pricing that is school-wide as well as for families/households.

The FREE content includes a VSO Virtual Field Trip, Storytime with the VSO, and a series of videos introducing students to the instruments that are often under-represented, like viola, bassoon, and oboe.

The PAID content (under VSO Virtual Connects) includes:

Music in Motion (for grades K-3)
A favourite lesson among younger students that richly blends music and dance.

Instrumental Workshops (for grades 6-12 and adult amateurs)
Specialized in-depth instrument clinics for band and string instruments. A great way to refresh the fundamentals of playing with a professional’s edge, while setting up smart practice habits.

Listen Up! (for grades 4-8)
Meet James and Jacob, members of the flute and viola sections, as they give an insider's view of Beethoven's 5th symphony. They will help you prepare to attend our online concert of this symphonic masterpiece! Students are invited to create artwork that will be compiled into a keepsake musical video for all participants.

Meet the Maestro! (for ages 8-adult)
Visit Maestro Otto Tausk at home in the Netherlands and learn about the life of an orchestral conductor and Beethoven’s beautiful Symphony No. 6.

Please visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYegTdb7O2w for a sneak peek "trailer" of what you'll find on the VSO Virtual Learning Hub.

The musicians and staff of the VSO wish you all the best as we navigate these challenging times together. We hope you’ll join us in connecting through music.

Sincerely,

The VSO Education Team

P.S. Many of the musicians you will meet in the Virtual Learning videos teach at the VSO Schoo of Music - https://vsoschoolofmusic.ca/program-category/virtual-classroom-online-music-classes/ - which is running private and group lessons online, including wildly popular Mini Music Makers classes.

Become a better explorer and ambassador for your local beach! In this program, we'll discuss how we rely and impact our oceans while exploring how Indigenous diets continue to depend on the health of the land and oceans, how colonization has impacted Indigenous Peoples’ ability to survive, and how to respect the importance of the land, animals, and water.

Virtual AquaSchool is an opportunity to connect with our expert educators from the Vancouver Aquarium over a 4-week period. Students will also have access to our Online Learning Environment, which hosts a suite of tools and resources such as assignments, photo and video galleries, and discussion boards. Here, students will be able to build on the concepts they’ve learned from the live workshops, and complete mid-week assignments and activities that allow them to continue learning and exploring on their own time and in their own environment.

This is a program developed specifically for committed educators and learners who are guided by curiosity and creativity. Each Virtual AquaSchool series will explore a different concept. While Virtual AquaSchool is BC Curriculum-minded, the focus is on discovery and skill-building.
