Program Description & Details

Tundra & I will visit your school if it is within a reasonable travel distance. During the COVID 19 pandemic, this visit occurs outdoors, preferrably in a forested area on your school grounds or nearby. If no such location, then we use your school fields & we improvise that it is a forest. Students & staff get to watch Tundra's behavior & I explain what wolves in the wild would be doing. I tell many First Nation stories & legends about the wolf & why this animal is so important to their culture. I explain the important role the wolf plays in the ecosystem as an apex predator & keystone species. Opportunity for many questions from students & staff. Cost is $100 for the walks & travel expenses to the school.

If your school is too far away, I can over a ZOOM version of this program where the same material is covered & the students & staff get to see the four wolves our centre has.

Be an archaeologist for a day! Discover the rich, 9,000-year history of the First Nations people who lived along the lower Fraser River by learning about their lifeways, tools and technologies. These 50-minute virtual programs were designed in collaboration with archaeologists from the Laboratory of Archaeology at UBC.

You can select between two digital program options:

  • Archaeology of the Lower Fraser River: Hunting + Fishing
  • Archaeology of the Lower Fraser River: Woodworking + Home Life

During the program students will discover the rich 9,000-year history of First Nation communities along the Lower Fraser River. With the help of volunteer facilitators during the live digital component, students will learn about the lifeways, tools and technology used by First Nations people in the past.  Students will be encouraged to think about how cultural belongings were made and used long ago. By understanding the deep knowledge First Nations required to create tools and belongings, students will enhance their respect for First Nations Cultures today.

The live digital session is part of an overall unit plan, with prerequisite lessons that show the techniques used by archaeologists to find and identify the belongings.

Once you book this school program, you will receive the complete unit plan by email, along with confirmation of date and time of the live digital component.

Program Description & Details

The Owls for Tots program is targeted to the 3-5 year age group. It is a very basic program that does not go into a lot of detail but rather is kept simple and direct. During the program the students will learn what makes a bird a bird, how owls are different from other birds, what species of owls are found in Southern BC, some of the dangers they face, and what the students can do to help.

There will be a short question and answer period at the end of the program.

The students will have the opportunity to meet a live owl during their classroom program. As we are working with animals, we cannot guarantee which bird will be available on the day of the program, so we unfortunately don’t take special requests.

You can visit our Offsite Education Birds page to find out more about the raptors who may visit your classroom (scroll down to the “Offsite Education Raptor Ambassadors” section).

Written to support distance learning but also useful for physically distanced teaching, a Tech-Up Learning Kit contains resources for both synchronous and/or asynchronous lessons. The teacher guide walks you through leading student activities over a series of sessions of approximately 30-45 minutes. Student activities are handouts for students to work through on their own as assigned, according to your own timeline and discretion.

In these activities, learners in Grades 4-6 will explore how parts of speech can be used to strengthen their understanding of variables.

Students will work towards writing their own Mad Lib Stories before using Scratch to code a Mad Lib story generator.

There is also an optional extension activity if you would like to build further on the coding concepts explored in these lessons.

This kit contains resources for both synchronous and asynchronous lessons.

Tech-Up Learning Specialists are available to support you with these kits.

This virtual workshop will introduce students to coding with random generators and arrays within micro:bit classroom.

NO PHYSICAL MICRO:BIT REQUIRED.

In this workshop we will work to familiarize your students with coding within the micro:bit classroom, opening up the opportunity for you to continue using micro:bit lessons with your class.

Students will learn how to create, access, and changes lists as well as explore the uses of inputs and random numbers. They will work towards creating a random generator to help them solve the everyday problem of “I’m bored, what should I do?”

This workshop will cover basicsvariablesarrays, and input and leaves room for possible further extension. This activity can be done entirely using the online simulator if no physical micro:bit is available.
